The aim here is to create a competitive security/surveillance camera solution entirely open source.

Functionality Expected

  • High definition video recording w/ sound option
  • IP-based solution
  • Ethernet model should have POE option
  • WiFi option
  • On-board storage capability
  • On-device web interface
  • Multiple streams (sizes, codecs?)

Build-it-Now Solution

If I had to build something close to what I intend with this project in less than a week, this is how I'd do it:

  • Raspberry Pi
  • RasPi camera module or USB webcam
  • POE power / data splitter (And a POE switch or injector)
  • Install webserver, back-end programs / scripts and streaming service (with VLC?) to RPi
  • Create case / mount

Ideas

  • USB camera, not RPi-like camera modules
  • On-board storage is SD card (maybe even ROM on its own internal microSD?)
  • Could be custom PCB based on RPi
